Skyrmions and domain walls in ( 2 + 1 ) dimensions

چکیده
We study classical solutions of the vector O(3) sigma model in (2 + 1) dimensions, spontaneously broken to O(2) × Z2. The model possesses Skyrmion-type solutions as well as stable domain walls which connect different vacua. We show that different types of waves can propagate on the wall, including waves carrying a topological charge. The domain wall can also absorb Skyrmions and, under appropriate initial conditions, it is possible to emit a Skyrmion from the wall.

We study the 3 + 1 dimensional Skyrme model with a mass term different from the usual one. We show that this new model possesses domain walls solutions. We describe how, in the equivalent 2+1 dimensional model, the Skyrmion is absorbed by the wall.
متن کاملSkyrmions from instantons inside domain walls.
Some years ago, Atiyah and Manton described a method to construct approximate Skyrmion solutions from Yang-Mills instantons. Here we present a dynamical realization of this construction using domain walls in a five-dimensional gauge theory. The non-Abelian gauge symmetry is broken in each vacuum but restored in the core of the domain wall, allowing instantons to nestle inside the wall. We show ...
متن کاملAn Improved Racetrack Structure for Transporting a Skyrmion
Magnetic skyrmions are promising building blocks for next generation data storage due to their stability, small size and extremely low currents to drive them, which can be used instead of traditional magnetic domain walls to store information as data bits in metalic racetrack memories. However, skyrmions can drift from the direction of electron flow due to the Magnus force and thus may annihila...
متن کاملAnomalies and Fermion Zero Modes on Strings and Domain Walls
We show that the mathematical relation between non-abelian anomalies in 2n dimensions, the parity anomaly in 2n + 1 dimensions, and the Dirac index density in 2n + 2 dimensions can be unders tood in terms of the physics of fermion zero modes on strings and domain walls. We show that the Dirac equation possesses chiral zero modes in the presence of strings in 2n +2 dimensions (such as occur in a...
متن کاملCsu Physics Colloquium
The discovery of a new topological form of magnetic order in the family of cubic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya helimagnets has recently attracted increasing scientific interest. This new magnetic state consists of a lattice of skyrmions, i.e., magnetic vortices characterized by a topological winding number. This implies that skyrmions represent topologicallyprotected magnetic particles with a skyrmion ...
